My wife doesn't seemed compelled to act by the low mileage e39 540i wagon

We have a crappy ford freestyle, CVT, blahhhhh. There is a wonderful 2000 540i wagon with 108k miles for sale. I want it. My wife doesn’t seem to care. Ughhhhh.

Freestyle? Aka the Taurus X? Very odd decision by Ford at the time.

Is it manual? That might be why she isn’t impressed. That or she would prefer it in brown with a nice diesel. Can’t blame her now, can you?

that needs to be frozen in liquid nitrogen so that future generations may know the genius of the e39 540 wagon... (has it got the good bbs style wheels?)

Hopefully it's a manual. Otherwise the transmission will probably blow up soon. Either way those are cool cars. Good luck!

No, the misses prefers an auto, and thats what it is. And that’s fine because it's the family hauler.

It sounds like the transmission is more like Russian roulette than a guaranteed 100k changeout. And it's a risk I'm willing to take as it maybe a service I'm willing to tackle.

Yeah, it’s a weird car that I got before I ever thought much about what I drove. We pretty much looked for the roomiest, most affordable, AWD vehicle. The Taurus X is actually a way better vehicle in two regards. The engine is bigger and it ditches the CVT. It goes to 60 in under 7.5 seconds as I recall. If we had a Taurus X I’d probably just put the money to a Z3 coupe instead of shopping new family haulers. Especially since my wife introduced me to the saying clitaurus. I’m grown but not grown up cause that makes me giggle.

No, the wheels are nothing special on the one I'm cheering for (not bad, just BMW OEM) but if you think that’s good, there is a 540i wagon with 65k miles also in my area. Just friggen amazing that some of these cars are out there.

So true on the Russian roulette. Those transmissions aren't too bad to get out. Especially on a lift. Couple of years ago my shop charged 7-8 hours for a replacment and it took roughly 5 hours.

Bought a 02 with 119K miles no trouble other than the plastic radiator parts needing replaced. Sold it to my nephew with 131K miles last spring. He is enjoying the hell out of it. It’s an automatic but as my nephew says, it wants to go, give it just a little gas and it takes off. Automatics give you no wifey problems.

I think the manual 540i was only sedan form, wagons are all auto in the US... I think.

the e39 has some weird offset so it can’t use wheels from other bmws for the most part. Which means a nice set of basketweaves typically go for $800+. I am hoping I luck out at the junkyard one day.
